The actor Will Kemp, known for his clowning in Shakespeare's plays, also actually danced from London to Norwich in 1601. In her first book, which is based on Kemp's diary, Hollinshead details his 117-mile journey, heightening the drama by condensing its duration, with many a bet hinging on Will's boast that he'd complete it in ``ten days or less.'' As he trips on his ebullient way with a trio of observers to ensure fair play, Will meets plenty of colorful characters, while Hollinshead describes his movements in language as energetic and varied as the dance itself. Morgan keeps pace with illustrations in gouache and india ink; her spirited Elizabethans burst their borders at every turn. A nifty introduction to Shakespeare's world and its robust humor.
