The tautness highly visual images, and terse documentation of this book make the author's fame as an aviation writer not only easily understandable, but doubly secure. It is a short, very human little masterpiece on war. Dealing with mission #115 by B-17 squadrons over Schweinfurt, Germany, on October 14, 1943, it gives an amazing impression of omniscience--and excitement---to the reader. History of the B-17, mission briefings, grounds crews at work, weather reports, all these contribute to the steady tension of buildup to the raid. The raid itself is described in hot, flashing sentences to match the thrill and terror of combat. And the tragic outcome, in which 50 planes and 600 crewmen failed to return, is documented in the same careful kind of research which makes the whole book so successful. Excellent!
