Martin's humorous rhymes, incorporating children's names (in alphabetical order of course), have the rhythm of jump rope chants: ``J my name is Justin. K my name is Kate. L my name is Larry. I just learned how to skate.'' Ratcheting the book up a few notches is the art; Grejniec paints childlike, striking scenes in vivid watercolor. Careful design makes the most of these paintings, evoking eastern European poster art even as they reflect the naive vitality that characterizes the work of preschoolers. It makes for an appealing reworking of the familiar ABC genre. (Picture book. 3- 6)
