Last year Meindert De Jong wrote Shadrach, a wonderful story about a little boy and his rabbit- a vividly sustained expression of the feelings people and animals have towards each other. He writes here of a lost year in the life of a small dog in the same touching way. The scene is America, not Holland, but a frightened stray's America, full of mean people and kind people, narrow escapes, buried bones near a country farm house, storms, and hamburg stands. As Candy who was first owned, badly scared, then lost by one family, roams his district, makes a wonderful new friend, is lost again under similar circumstances, we are those things with him, quite stricken with his near tragedy and overjoyed when he finds happiness at last.
