By this time most people know what to expect from M.F.K. Fisher and wont think they are going to get an encyclopedia of cooking from this title. Once again, as always, she is good reading for anyone interested in the fine art of cookery. Completely unorthodox, both in her likes and dislikes. Imagine anyone holding a brief for fried egg sandwiches (albeit limited to place and age) and milk toast- for Quails a la Financiere and Trout Brillat-Savarin- for a dozen and more other things as contradictory. This book is a merry, sometimes biting, often passionate defense of the lover's approach to food- any kind of food. Her likes and dislikes march through the pages; family dinners are given a new slant; her settings take one round the world; her gastronomical creed captures one's imagination. And I defy anyone who likes to cook to refrain from copying some of the recipes. An addition for the specialist's cookery shelf.
