A bedroom jungle adventure, with hazards hiding beneath every flap.
Chased through the jungle by a panting, stomping, unseen THING, a white lad needs viewers’ help at each page turn to choose his path: go left, past the…crouching lion, or right, toward the…beckoning tiger? Row that way, where…piranhas lurk, or this way, by…the crocodile? Fortunately, some threats attack each other, and others are avoided with a clever third choice, such as escaping both elephant and rhino by climbing a tree. In cartoon pictures, Hunt guides the intrepid adventurer through a series of leafy locales to a cave—where a glimpse of the THING’s red spectacles sends him hustling back home to open a door and find his disheveled mom (sporting a familiar pair of specs) holding out a toothbrush and urging him to brush. One last desperate choice remains for boy and readers: take the toothbrush, or make a break for the jungle?
Definitely a nail-biter.
