BETTY LOU BLUE

“Betty Lou Blue had the world’s largest feet. Whackety, thwackety, flappety feet.” Teased and taunted by the kids at school, Betty Lou’s huge feet make her a lonesome outcast until the first day of winter when a snowstorm closes school. Betty Lou watches from behind a tree as the kids build a snowman and go sledding. When a snow hill collapses and traps the children, Betty Lou is tempted to walk away, but she realizes if she does, she would be as mean as they are. Instead, it’s Betty Lou to the rescue. She uses her big feet like snowshoes, standing each kid on top of them and walking each one to safety. Kulikov’s now recognizable style of large eyes and unexpected, ground-up perspectives has the caricature flair to syncopate with the rhymed text. Pair this with Feet Man and Mr. Tiny (April 2006) for a foot-long storytime theme. (Picture book. 4-8)
