A blanc mange, a la Hollywood, trembles and shakes over the problems that beset Smedley Cork, smothering under his sister-in-law's miserly vigilance; Phipps, the Corks' butler whose past includes safe-cracking; Kay Shannon, wooed and hardwon by hopeful Joe Davenport; and Mrs. Cork's resourceful and resilient sister, Wilhelmina. The treasure hunt is for a moving picture actress' diary which footballs from one to the other as they tangle with a cinema-addicted police, play puss in the corner with each other and stumble over their own feet in well-meaning cooperation, which does not pay off until the last page.
