Ray Garrett's wife Peggy has Just committed suicide but he really doesn't know why even though his father-in-law, Ed Coleman, blames him, bullies him, and suggests that he exploited her sexually. This seems very unlikely: Ray is an ineffectual sort and now it seems that another death in Venice will take place—Coleman attacks Ray and pushes him into a lagoon. Ray hides out for a few days, there is a second scrimmage with Coleman (whom he might have killed), and at the end both men walk away. The reader who will have taken this at one sitting will also walk away with a sense of having been let down as well as put down. What happened?
