THE WISE FOOL

Rabelais' table of the cook who tries to charge for the smoke from his roast is a classic instance of turnabout fair play; the fool who arbitrates his dispute with the porter pays him off with the sound of the latter's coin. Paul Galdone's hypercharged drawings rev up the drama and stretch out the suspense but at least you can't miss the point.
