AN ICELAND FISHERMAN

This is a new edition, translated by Guy Endore and illustrated by Frederick T. Chapman, of the now classic tale of the Iceland fishermen who venture to the far north for their catches and return seasonally to their homes in Brittany. Here is a story of their struggle against the elements, and in particular of Yann, who hems and haws for several years before he proposes to the beautiful girl who returns his love -- having spent his time with women of lesser brightness. Once married, they enjoy a week of nuptial bliss, before the true brids, the sea, claims her own. In translation, this seems perhaps more passionate than in the original, and therefore for your older boys and girls.
