THIS LITTLE PIGGY WENT TO MARKET

by R. A. Herman & illustrated by Leonard Dobson

Pub Date: Dec. 1st, 2005
ISBN: 1-59354-040-X

This board-book version of the nursery rhyme combines lines from the classic with an imagined story to round it out. The first little pig goes to the market to sell flowers; the second stays home to complete chores. The third has lunch with his neighbor, but the fourth forgets about the lunch date. And the last pig makes an unwise decision when he allows a chicken to play with his balloon. The final page shows a father holding his son’s toes alongside the complete rhyme. Less successful than others in the Nursery Play-Along Classic series, this one’s flaw is in the overly busy and divided nature of the illustrations. Dobson’s pages show multiple actions of each pig, enriching the story, but losing the youngest listeners who will be confused by too much detail in too small a picture—each spread has from four to seven vignettes. Stick with others in the series. (Board book. 1-3)
