Featured here is a woman's anguish and quiet desperation. The widowed mother of three, Gracie is employed in a toy factory. Home is a tenement on Anzio Street, a sordid, gloomy setting of four dismal rooms tellingly evoked. Having loved her husband passionately, it is only to recapture a few moments of remembered rapture that Gracie has a one-night, alcoholic affair with a fellow factory worker. Pregnant with the child of a man she scarcely knows — and doesn't even like — she frantically seeks a solution to her problem. Gracie's Catholic background and training make her recoil from the thought of an abortion at first, but she ultimately convinces herself that it is the only way out. The eventual resolution of her dilemma offers some prospect of hope for the future. Spiritual soap opera.
