MYSTERIOUS FIRES AND LIGHTS

You may not go along with some of Mr. Gaddis' speculations but his facts are certainly curious...and intriguing. The first half of the book could be called notes on the sea above us with chapters on UFO's, the lively (and prankish) phenomena known as ball lightning, firefalls and fireballs and the theory that we may be living under a ceiling filled with ""atmospheric animals"" or sentient beings that thrive on energy and make their home in the upper stratosphere (with a surprising number of scientists subscribing to this possibility). The second half demonstrates that man is sometimes rather shocking with case histories of human lightning rods, magnets, poltergeist incendiaries, firewalkers and rather frightening examples of what could very well be internal spontaneous combustion. Obviously, Prometheus' gift had some strange side effects. This doesn't shed much professional light on the problem (Mr. Gaddis is a reporter) but it raises some interesting questions.
