A fond and friendly (if perhaps for some tastes too contrived in its colloquialisms) introduction to the ""fortunate islands""- Micronesia. This dates back over a familiarity of twenty years, and comes into focus with the author's naval experiences in the Marshalls and Bikini. A gentle, generous people, healthy save for diseases the West has introduced, civilized according to their needs, these natives receive appreciative appraisal. As do their islands, their dwellings, their rituals and religion, their dances, their codes of morality -- while only the intrusions of the white man have contributed corruption to the serenity and integrity of this world...For specialized tastes, outside the ordinary run of travel books.
