Three decades of Faulkner's writing are spanned in these selections he has made from his own work. His Foreword, in which he sums up his Credo- that the writer writes "to uplift man's heart", was written specifically for this collection. The text of his acceptance of the Nobel Prize follows; then a full length novel The Sound and the Fury, which sets the stage of Jefferson, Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, and introduces the Compsons, who pass back and forth across his stage, and particularly Caddy (Candace), and other local figures. Personally, Faulkner can stand on the short stories rather than the novels and novellas (of which three are included), and among these short stories are several that are unforgettable,- A Rose for Emily, Barn Burning and Turnabout, all included here.
