The International Booker Prize revealed its 2025 longlist, with 13 books in contention for the British award given annually to translated works of fiction.
On a Woman’s Madness, written by Astrid Roemer and translated by Lucy Scott, made the longlist; it was originally published in Dutch 43 years ago and was previously longlisted for the National Book Award. On the Calculation of Volume: Book I, written by Solvej Balle and translated from Danish by Barbara J. Haveland, another National Book Award nominee, also made the International Booker longlist.
Three French-language books were nominated: There’s a Monster Behind the Door, written by Gaëlle Bélem and translated by Karen Fleetwood and Laëtitia Saint-Loubert; Small Boat, written by Vincent Delecroix and translated by Helen Stevenson; and A Leopard-Skin Hat, written by Anne Serre and translated by Mark Hutchinson.
Two books translated from Japanese made the longlist: Hunchback, writtenby Saou Ichikawa and translated by Polly Barton and Under the Eye of the Big Bird, written by Hiromi Kawakami and translated by Asa Yoneda.
Also longlisted were The Book of Disappearance, written by Ibtisam Azem and translated from Arabic by Sinan Antoon; Solenoid, written by Mircea Cărtărescu and translated from Romanian by Sean Cotter; Reservoir Bitches, written by Dahlia de la Cerda and translated from Spanish by Heather Cleary and Julia Sanches; Eurotrash, written by Christian Kracht and translated from German by Daniel Bowles; Perfection, written by Vincenzo Latronico and translated from Italian by Sophie Hughes; and Heart Lamp, written by Banu Mushtaq and translated from Kannada by Deepa Bhasthi.
The shortlist for the prize will be revealed on April 8, with the winner announced at a ceremony in London on May 20.
