Miranda July’s All Fours is headed to the small screen.
Starz is developing July’s novel as a television series, the network announced in a news release, calling the book “propulsive, sexy, and irreverent.”
July’s novel, published last May by Riverhead, follows a married woman who embarks on a road trip from Los Angeles to New York but pulls over after 30 minutes, checks into a motel, and has a sexual relationship with a man she meets at a gas station. A critic for Kirkus wrote of the novel, which was a finalist for the National Book Award, “This tender, strange treatise on getting out from the ‘prefab structures’ of a conventional life is quintessentially July.”
Kathryn Busby, the president of original programming for Starz, said in a statement, “We are honored that Miranda has entrusted us with the adaptation of her magnificent novel All Fours. As we continue to expand our boundary-pushing programming for adults, we’re excited to work with Miranda on this extraordinary story that resonates with women around the world.”
July, who wrote and directed the films Me and You and Everyone We Know, The Future, and Kajillionaire, said, “I’m thrilled that All Fours has found a home at Starz. I had an electric feeling from the moment we met; it was clear we were speaking the same language. Rather than shying away from all the messy contradictions within sexuality and desire, Starz really digs into the reality of who women are and what we want, which makes it the perfect place to bring my novel to life. This is going to be wild.”
