Andrew McCarthy is going back to the ’80s.
The actor, known for his roles in iconic movies from the decade, such as St. Elmo’s Fire and Pretty in Pink, is writing a book about the so-called Brat Pack, the Associated Press reports.
Hachette imprint Grand Central will publish McCarthy’s Brat: An ’80s Story in the spring of 2021. The publisher says the book will be “a revealing look at coming of age in a maelstrom, reckoning with conflicted ambition, innocence, addiction, and masculinity.”
McCarthy was a member of the Brat Pack, a group of young actors that also included Emilio Estevez, Molly Ringwald, Rob Lowe, and Ally Sheedy, among others.
“For years people have asked me, on a near daily basis, ‘What was it like “back in the day?’” McCarthy said of the genesis of the book. “Routinely, I’d offer up any number of stock responses. Finally I thought, ‘Let’s take a hard look under that rock.’ What I found surprised me, at times scared me, and finally made sense of a lot of seemingly disparate parts of my life.”
Brat will be the third book from McCarthy, who is also a travel writer. His previous books include a memoir, The Longest Way Home: One Man’s Quest for the Courage to Settle Downand Just Fly Away, a novel for young adults.
