Annette Bening will star in the latest screen adaptation of a book by Liane Moriarty, Variety reports.

Bening, the Oscar-nominated actor known for her roles in films including The Grifters, American Beauty, and The Kids Are All Right, will star in the Peacock limited-series adaptation of Moriarty’s novel Apples Never Fall.

The book, published in 2021 by Henry Holt, follows four adult siblings whose mother goes missing and whose father is suspected by police of involvement with her disappearance. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the book “funny, sad, astute, occasionally creepy, and slyly irresistible.”

The Peacock adaptation will be written by Melanie Marnich (Big Love, The Big C), and the pilot episode will be directed by Chris Sweeney (Back to Life, The Tourist). Marnich, Sweeney, and Moriarty are among the series’ executive producers.

Moriarty’s books have proved a hot commodity in Hollywood. Her 2014 novel, Big Little Lies, was adapted into a HBO series starring Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, and her 2018 book, Nine Perfect Strangers, formed the basis of a Hulu miniseries featuring Kidman and Melissa McCarthy. A film based on Moriarty’s 2013 novel, The Husband’s Secret, is in the works, with Blake Lively set to star.
