Apple TV+ dropped a trailer for its upcoming series adaptation of Carl Hiaasen’s Bad Monkey.
Hiaasen’s novel, published in 2013 by Knopf, follows Andrew Yancy, a suspended deputy sheriff in Florida whose latest beat is as a restaurant inspector; he is tasked with transporting a severed arm to Miami and see if he can find its (presumably dead) owner. A critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “Not as funny as Hiaasen’s best…with a title character more vicious than amusing, but still the gold standard for South Florida criminal farce.”
The series is created by Bill Lawrence (Scrubs, Ted Lasso) and stars Vince Vaughn as Yancy. Other cast members include Rob Delaney, L. Scott Caldwell, Meredith Hagner, Natalie Martinez, and John Ortiz.
The trailer for the series, set to Larkin Poe’s cover of Tom Petty’s “Runnin’ Down a Dream” and Chris Isaak’s “Baby Did a Bad Bad Thing,” opens with Yancy (Vaughn) explaining, “I’m suspended. I’m technically not even a detective anymore. They said I was consistently reckless, inappropriate, and glib.”
Later in the trailer, Yancy talks on a cell phone while walking, saying, “My gut is telling me that there’s somebody who’s keeping an eye on me because of what I know, but I really don’t know what I know.” A car tries to hit him, and he jumps through a plate glass window to escape its path. Yancy is then seen being examined by a doctor, who tells him, “You have a concussion. Please tell me you didn’t drive here.”
“I don’t think I did,” Yancy responds.
Bad Monkey is set to premiere on Aug. 14.
