Former President Barack Obama revealed his annual summer reading list, continuing a tradition that dates back to 2009.
Obama posted his list of 14 books he recommends on the social platform X, in a post captioned, “I’ve read some great books over the last few months and wanted to share some of my favorites. Let me know if you have any recommendations for books I should check out!”

Eight of Obama’s picks were fiction, two of which have been longlisted for the Booker Prize: Percival Everett’s James and Rita Bullwinkel’s Headshot. Liz Moore’s The God of the Woods made Obama’s list, as did Zach Williams’ Beautiful Days, Kaveh Akbar’s Martyr!, Lisa Ko’s Memory Piece, Kaliane Bradley’s The Ministry of Time, and Adelle Waldman’s Help Wanted.
Obama shouted out one of his good friends, Marilynne Robinson, by including her Reading Genesis on his list, and also highlighted his love of basketball with the selection of Hanif Abdurraqib’s There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension. His other nonfiction picks were Jonathan Blitzer’s Everyone Who Is Gone Is Here: The United States, Central America, and the Making of a Crisis; John Ganz’s When the Clock Broke: Con Men, Conspiracists, and How America Cracked Up in the Early 1990s; Richard V. Reeves’ Of Boys and Men: Why the Modern Male Is Struggling, Why It Matters, and What to Do About It; and Hampton Sides’ The Wide Wide Sea: Imperial Ambition, First Contact and the Fateful Final Voyage of Captain James Cook.
Last month, the Washington Post’s book staff tried to predict which titles would make Obama’s list this year, and correctly called four of them: the books by Abdurraqib, Waldman, Moore, and Everett.
