Dylan Mulvaney will tell the story of her life in a new memoir.
Abrams Image will publish the actor and influencer’s Paper Doll: Notes From a Late Bloomer next year. The press calls the book “both laugh-out-loud funny and powerfully honest” and “a love letter to everyone who stands up for queer joy.”
Mulvaney, a San Diego native, worked as a stage actor in plays including The Book of Mormon and How the Grinch Stole Christmas! before starting a TikTok account in 2020. She came out as transgender in 2022, sharing stories of her transition on the video hosting service.
She became a target of the transphobic right after meeting with President Joe Biden in October 2022, and again the following year when she promoted Bud Light beer on her Instagram account. The promotion led to a boycott of the brand, pushed by the right-wing singer Kid Rock.
In her book, Abrams Image says, Mulvaney “pulls back the curtain of her ‘It Girl’ lifestyle with a witty and intimate reflection of her life pre- and post-transition. She covers everything from her first big break in theater to the first time her dad recognized her as a girl to how she handled scandals, cancellations, and…tucking.”
Mulvaney announced her book in a video on TikTok, saying, “The book is a collection of journal entries for my first year of transition, covering topics that I couldn’t talk about on here, as well as essays that explore some of the messier moments, like doing ayahuasca, and being kissed as a girl for the first time. But more than anything, it is about how I rediscovered trans joy after extreme pain.”
Paper Doll is scheduled for publication on March 11, 2025.
