Jonathan Karl’s next book will incorporate interviews with President Donald Trump, Axios reports.
Dutton will publish the ABC journalist’s Retribution: Donald Trump and the Campaign That Changed America in the fall. The press says the book “brings us behind closed doors deep inside the White House and presidential campaigns, revealing the extraordinary moments that ended one man’s presidency and brought another back to power.”
Karl, the chief Washington correspondent for ABC News, interviewed Trump throughout the 2024 presidential campaign for the book. He told Axios that he did not believe Trump would win the election and that the book will explore why he was wrong.
Karl is the author of three previous books about the president: Front Row at the Trump Show (2020); Betrayal: The Final Act of the Trump Show (2021); and Tired of Winning: Donald Trump and the End of the Grand Old Party (2023). In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote that Tired of Winning contained “excellent reporting and assured writing—an ominous warning.”
The cover of Retribution features Evan Vucci’s now-famous photograph of Trump raising his fist after the assassination attempt at a rally near Butler, Pennsylvania. Dutton says the book is “a story of unprecedented political plot twists, showing what happened behind the scenes as political fortunes fell and rose again, and as a new team coalesced around President Trump with the goal of creating an entirely new world order.”
Retribution is slated for publication on Oct. 28.
