The latest pick for the Good Morning America book club is Stephanie Land’s Class: A Memoir of Motherhood, Hunger, and Higher Education.

Land’s book, slated for publication Tuesday by One Signal/Atria, tells the story of her journey as a college student at the University of Montana, where she enrolled as a single mother in her 30s after years of working as a house cleaner. A critic for Kirkus wrote of the book, “The overall quality of the writing and the importance of the story make for a powerful read.”

The book is a follow-up to her 2019 memoir. Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and a Mother’s Will To Survive. That book was a national bestseller and was adapted for a 2021 limited series on Netflix starring Margaret Qualley, Nick Robinson, and Anika Noni Rose.

Rebecca Jarvis announced the selection of Class on Good Morning America and introduced a profile of Land, in which the author discussed the book with the journalist at the Strand, a New York bookstore.

“This is the part of my story that I’m the most proud of,” Land said.

Asked by Jarvis why it was so important for her to get a college degree, Land replied, “I wanted to be part of the working, professional, contributing to society world. I knew that I would not be happy with myself if I didn’t at least try.”
