Sofia Coppola is launching her own book imprint with London-based publisher Mack.
The filmmaker discussed the new imprint, Important Flowers, in an interview with Vogue, revealing that the first book to come out under the imprint will be a collection of photographs taken by Corinne Day on the set of Coppola’s 1999 film adaptation of Jeffrey Eugenides’ The Virgin Suicides.
“In Day’s photographs, the lush mystique of Coppola’s set runs through images of the young actors at work and between takes, their candid posturing and pensive expressions reflecting the intimate and collaborative environment of the shoot,” Mack says of the book, which is set for publication next April.
The imprint’s second book, due next September, will be “a bespoke visual history of Chanel’s Haute Couture designs.” Coppola was an intern at Chanel’s Paris studio when she was 15.
Mack says that future Important Flowers books will “reflect Coppola’s interests across diverse areas of practice, touching on film, photography, art, and fashion, each designed by Joseph Logan Design Studio.”
Coppola explained the imprint’s name to Vogue, saying, “A friend of mine said it while we were talking about big flower arrangements once—the type of big, high-society hostess flowers from the ’80s. I did a photo shoot with a lot of those big flower arrangements and he said, ‘Oh, I love important flowers.’”
