Dakota Fanning has come calling to co-produce an adaptation of Sophie Kinsella’s bestselling 2012 romance, I’ve Got Your Number, according to Deadline.
Amazon Studios and production company Echo Lake Entertainment are working on a movie adaptation of the English author’s novel with Fanning as a producer. Kirsten “Kiwi” Smith has been hired to co-write the screenplay; she’s the author of the 2013 YA novel Trinkets, and she co-created its excellent, Daytime Emmy–winning Netflix TV-show adaptation. She also co-wrote the screenplays for Legally Blonde, the much-loved movie version of Amanda Brown’s 2001 novel, and Ella Enchanted, which is based on a 1997 children’s book by Gail Carson Levine.
In Kinsella’s novel, physical therapist and bride-to-be Poppy Wyatt loses her engagement ring and has her cell phone stolen shortly before her wedding ceremony. She desperately needs a phone to track down her ring, and luckily, she finds one in a trash bin. However, it turns out to belong to consulting-firm executive Sam Roxton, who insists on getting it back. The cell-crossed couple get to know each other via texts, and before long, they find themselves entangled in each other’s complicated lives. Kirkus’ review called the book a “screwball romance with a likable and vulnerable heroine” and “a male love interest straight out of the Mr. Darcy playbook.”
No casting information was announced at this early stage, and it’s unclear if Fanning will star. She’s currently set to appear with her sister, Elle, in a movie version of Kristin Hannah’s 2015 novel, The Nightingale; filming was underway in Budapest back in March, but production was halted due to Covid-19-related concerns. As a result, that movie now has a planned release date of Dec. 22, 2021.
Two of Kinsella’s previous novels, 2001’s Confessions of a Shopaholic and 2002’s Shopaholic Takes Manhattan, were adapted as the 2009 film Confessions of a Shopaholic, starring Isla Fisher.
