Jenny Slate has joined the cast of the film adaptation of Colleen Hoover’s bestseller It Ends With Us, Deadline reports.

Hoover’s novel, published in 2016 by Atria, became a TikTok phenomenon in 2021, making the author one of the most widely read writers in the world. The book follows Lily, a florist who falls in love with Ryle, a surgeon with a violent temper. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the novel, “Packed with riveting drama and painful truths, this book powerfully illustrates the devastation of abuse—and the strength of the survivors.”

Slate is known for her roles in films including Obvious Child and Everything Everywhere All at Once and series such as Bob’s Burgers and House of Lies. She is the co-author of the children’s book Marcel the Shell With Shoes On: Things About Me, which was based on a short animated film, and she co-wrote the screenplay for a feature-length film featuring the character, which was nominated for an Academy Award.

Slate will play Ryle’s sister, Allysa, in the film. She joins previously announced actors Blake Lively (Lily) and Justin Baldoni (Ryle). Brandon Sklenar stars as Atlas, Lily’s first love, who encourages her to leave Ryle.

The film adaptation is written by Christy Hall (I Am Not Okay With This) and directed by Baldoni. Baldoni, Lively, and Hoover are among the movie’s executive producers.

Hoover shared the news of Slate’s casting on Instagram, writing, “We have our Allysa! @jennyslate is one of the most talented humans, I can’t even believe she’ll be in this movie. I’m so hungry right now because I’ve been really freaking busy today so I can’t tell if I need to eat or if this nausea is from too much excitement. Gonna go eat a taco but I bet I’ll feel the same way after that.”
