Barnes and Noble’s latest book club pick is Jess Walter’s novel The Cold Millions.
The novel, Water’s seventh, follows two hobo brothers in early-20th-century Spokane, Washington, who fall in with a vaudeville singer and teenage suffragette. “We have heard that Jess Walter writes nonstop: Seven days a week, 365 days a year,” wrote a reviewer for Kirkus. “Please, never stop.”
“This is an intimate story of sibling bonds and betrayal, of the haves and have-nots, and of love that will keep readers hooked, staying with them long after the final page, which is why we have chosen it as our November 2020 Book Club selection,” said Barnes and Noble Vice President Jackie De Leo in a statement.
Walter said he was “thrilled” to have his novel selected for the book club.
“This book is dedicated to my father, and coincidently the first book reading of mine he ever attended was at a Barnes and Noble,” he said. “I’ve also been a judge for the Barnes and Noble Discover Award and have always appreciated the way B and N champions writers.”
Readers are invited to discuss Walter’s book on the Barnes and Noble book club Facebook page. The discussion will culminate in an online event on Dec. 1, featuring Walter in conversation with author Richard Russo.
