Alexander Chee’s next novel is coming in 2025.
Other People’s Husbands will be published by Mariner Books, Publishers Weekly reports, adding that it will be about a “queer Korean American novelist who returns to his alma mater as a visiting writer.”
Chee’s first novel, Edinburgh, was published in 2001 to critical acclaim. He followed that book up with another novel, The Queen of the Night, in 2016. His most recent book, the essay collection How To Write an Autobiographical Novel, was released in 2018; in a starred review, a critic for Kirkus said the book is “deserving of a place among other modern classic writers’ memoirs like Stephen King’s On Writing and Chee’s mentor Annie Dillard’s The Writing Life.”
Chee confirmed the news of his next book on Instagram, writing, “I have news: I sold a novel. It’s a little different for me. What’s it about? It’s a campus novel, kind of. Very much not about Dartmouth. I’ve been saying Dark Academia but no one dies, and with sex. Maybe you can guess from the title. I began writing it to crack myself up during a difficult time, thinking ‘Well clearly I will never show this to anyone’ and here we are.”
He added, “I can’t wait for me to finish it so I can find out how it ends and then I’ll put it in the world for all of you.”
