Young adult author Nicola Yoon has a new novel coming out—but this time, she has an older audience in mind.
Anchor will publish Yoon’s first novel for adults, One of Our Kind, in 2024, the publisher announced in a news release. Yoon describes the book as “The Stepford Wives meets Get Out.”
Yoon made her literary debut in 2015 with the young adult novel Everything, Everything. The book spawned a 2017 film adaptation starring Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson.
Her other books include The Sun Is Also a Star, which was a finalist for the National Book Award and adapted into a film, and Instructions for Dancing, published last year.
One of Our Kind will follow a family who moves to a Black planned community in California, only to uncover a frightening secret about the town’s history. Yoon’s agent, Jodi Reamer, says the novel “takes the Nicola Yoon canon to a brilliant new level.”
Yoon said she was “elated” that Anchor will be publishing her next novel.
“For most of my adult life, I’ve been thinking about what it means to truly be free when you’re Black in America and the ways in which that freedom is complicated by the presumptions we make about ourselves and each other,” she said.
