Naima Coster’s novel What’s Mine and Yours is the latest pick for Jenna Bush Hager’s Today show book club.

Coster’s book tells the story of two North Carolina families whose lives become intertwined following a tragedy. A reviewer for Kirkus calls the novel “a gripping portrait of generational pain” and “tender but—miraculously—never sentimental.”

“What’s Mine and Yours by Naima Coster is a sweeping, fresh new novel,” Hager said. “The story is epic in scope. It is about understanding the demons and the hardships that come before us and how they affect our lives.”

Coster made her literary debut in 2018 with the novel Halsey Street, which was a finalist for the Kirkus Prize. What’s Mine and Yours was originally conceived as a short story, Coster told Today.

“It was a story about the lengths that a mother will go to, to secure a good future for her children,” she said. “The book really grew from the two mothers, their dreams for themselves and also their dreams for their children.”

On Twitter, Coster wrote, “My novel What’s Mine and Yours is the #ReadWithJenna book pick for March. I am beside myself, and I can’t wait for this book to come out tomorrow.”

Hager’s book club debuted in 2018. Previous selections have included Mateo Askaripour’s Black Buck, Rumaan Alam’s Leave the World Behind, and Abi Daré’s The Girl With the Louding Voice.
