Former President Barack Obama shared a list of his favorite books of 2024, continuing a longtime tradition from the politician and avid reader.
Obama posted his list on the social platform X, writing, “I always look forward to sharing my annual list of favorite books, movies, and music. Today I’ll start by sharing some of the books that have stuck with me long after I finished reading them. Check them out this holiday season, preferably at an independent bookstore or library!”
Obama’s list of 10 books was evenly split between fiction and nonfiction. He included Sally Rooney’s novel Intermezzo, which a critic for Kirkus called “a clear leap forward” for the Irish author.
He also included Samantha Harvey’s Booker Prize–winning Orbital, and Ayşegül Savaş’ The Anthropologists, which is longlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction. The two other novels on his list were Martin MacInnes’ In Ascensionand Dinaw Mengestu’s Someone Like Us.
Obama’s nonfiction list, unsurprisingly, skewed political, with the former president recommending Arlie Russell Hochschild’s Stolen Pride: Loss, Shame, and the Rise of the Right, along with Daniel Susskind’s economy-themed Growth: A History and a Reckoning. He also included Patriot, the memoir by the late Russian activist Alexei Navalny, translated by Arch Tait with Stephen Dalziel; the book was longlisted for the National Book Critics Circle Award for autobiography.
Rounding out Obama’s nonfiction picks were Jonathan Haidt’s The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood Is Causing an Epidemic of Mental Illnessand Adam Moss’ The Work of Art: How Something Comes From Nothing.
