The film adaptation of Casey McQuiston’s Red, White & Royal Blue won’t skimp on the sexy.
Attitude reports that the upcoming movie has received an R rating from the Motion Picture Association of America for “language, some sexual content and partial nudity.”
McQuiston’s romance novel, published in 2019 by St. Martin’s Griffin, follows the relationship between the son of an American president and a British prince, who form an intense rivalry before falling in love. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the book “a clever, romantic, sexy love story.”
The film adaptation is directed by playwright Matthew López, and written by López and Ted Malawer (Rise, Halston). Taylor Zakhar Perez (Scandal, Minx) and Nicholas Galitzine (Cinderella) star in the movie; the cast also includes Uma Thurman, Stephen Fry, Clifton Collins Jr., and Rachel Hilson.
Just Jared reports that news of the film’s R rating—which means that viewers under 17 need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian—is exciting fans of the novel.
“YES there is no way to make an authentic adaptation of this book without it being rated R,” one fan wrote, while another tweeted, “Yes! We better see some butts.”
Red, White & Royal Blue will premiere—butts or no butts—on Amazon Prime Video on Aug. 11.
