Clare Leslie Hall’s Broken Country is the latest pick for Reese Witherspoon’s book club.
Hall’s novel, published Tuesday by Simon & Schuster, follows Beth and Frank, a married couple in 1960s England who are mourning the death of their son; their lives are thrown into disarray when Beth’s first love moves back town. A critic for Kirkus called the book “an elegantly written historical novel with a compelling love triangle and a couple of clever twists.”
Witherspoon announced her selection of the novel in a video on Instagram, saying, “You think you have it together, but then you are going to lose your chicken when you read this book. This book is so good. There’s a murder, and you don’t know who it is until the very end and it’s shocking, and you cannot believe the ending. I totally didn’t guess it. I love this book so much.”
Hall reacted to her book’s selection on Instagram, writing, “Hard to put into words how totally thrilled and honoured I am that BROKEN COUNTRY is the March pick for @reesesbookclub @reesewitherspoon. I have adored this book club from its inception without ever dreaming I might one day have a RBC novel of my own. It means the world to me and I am so grateful and a little bit overexcited that I can finally share this incredible news.”
