It’s been a year full of bleak news, but at long last, here’s a story to make you smile: Authors Roxane Gay and Debbie Millman are officially engaged.
Millman, the designer and podcast host, made the announcement on her Instagram account. In a slideshow of photos featuring cursive text, she wrote, “I met a girl who LOVES to write and is REALLY into Beyoncé. We went on some DATES, we fell in love, and now she is my fiancé.”
Gay confirmed the news on her Twitter account:
Ahhh! Yes, I am indeed engaged to @debbiemillman! It is very exciting! Thank you ALL for the kind words and congratulations.

Gay, one of the country’s best-known public intellectuals, is best known as the author of the essay collection Bad Feminist and the memoir Hunger. She’s also the publisher of Gay Mag and the co-host, with Tressie McMillan Cottom, of the Hear to Slay podcast.
Millman has written six books about branding and design, and is the founder and host of Design Matters, a popular and long-running podcast about design.
On Twitter, Millman and Gay received congratulations from some notable admirers:
