Samantha Morton will play a lead role in the Paramount+ series adaptation of C.J. Tudor’s The Burning Girls, Deadline reports.
Tudor’s novel, published last year by Ballantine, follows the Rev. Jack Brooks, a vicar who moves to a small, secretive town with her teenage daughter, Flo; the two soon realize that the town is haunted by more than just its past. A critic for Kirkus called the book “top-notch and deliciously creepy storytelling.”
Morton, best known for her Oscar-nominated roles in the films Sweet and Lowdown and In America, will play Jack in the series, with Ruby Stokes (Bridgerton) starring as Flo.
Other cast members of the series include Élodie Grace Orkin (Stranger Things), Rupert Graves (V for Vendetta), John Macmillan (The Nevers), Conrad Khan (Black Mirror), Jane Lapotaire (The Crown), and Safia Oakley-Green (Requiem).
Hans Rosenfeldt and Camilla Ahlgren are writing the adaptation, with Charles Martin (His Dark Materials) attached to direct at least two episodes, according to the website IMDb. Tudor is among the show’s executive producers.
Tudor celebrated the casting news on Twitter, writing, “Meet the cast of THE BURNING GIRLS, filming now for @ParamountPlusUK. I could not be more thrilled that these fantastic actors are bringing my book to life!”
