The planned film adaptation of Stephen King’s Fairy Tale is now headed to the small screen, Deadline reports.
The production company A24, known for television shows including Euphoria, Beef, and The Carmichael Show, is now developing the adaptation of King’s novel. The project was originally envisioned as a film, as Deadline reported in 2022.
King’s novel, published two years ago by Scribner, follows Charlie Reade, a teenage boy who befriends a man who owns a shed that turns out to be a portal to a bizarre alternate world. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus called the book “a tale that’s at once familiar and full of odd and unexpected twists—vintage King, in other words.”
The planned film adaptation was to be written, produced, and directed by Paul Greengrass (Bloody Sunday, United 93). Greengrass will still be involved in the television version; he will expand the script with J.H. Wyman (The Mexican, Fringe). Wyman will be the showrunner, and will executive produce with King and Greengrass.
Fairy Tale is one of many King adaptations in the works. A film based on King’s short story “The Monkey,” directed by Osgood Perkins, is set for release in February, while a new film adaptation of King’s novel The Running Man, directed by Edgar Wright, is also set to premiere next year.
