Lev Grossman’s The Bright Sword is being developed as a television series, Deadline reports.
Grossman’s fantasy novel, scheduled for publication next Tuesday by Viking, follows a knight hoping to join King Arthur’s Round Table who learns that the king and several of his knights have died, leaving a ragtag group of cavaliers with no real leader. In a starred review, a critic for Kirkus wrote of the novel, “Astoundingly, a fresh take on an extremely well-trodden legend.”
The series adaptation is being developed by Lionsgate Television and 3 Arts Entertainment. Grossman will serve as an executive producer on the series.
Grossman is no stranger to television. His Magicians trilogy of novels (The Magicians, The Magician King, The Magician’s Land) was adapted into a Syfy series that aired from 2015 to 2020.
Grossman told Deadline, “My ambition with The Bright Sword was to completely reimagine the legend of King Arthur—to make it fresh, relevant and diverse, while at the same time hanging onto all the classic elements that fans like me love. I’ve worked with Erwin [Stoff of 3 Arts Entertainment] before so when he threw his hat in the ring, I knew he was exactly the right person to bring The Bright Sword to the screen.”
