Reese Witherspoon has selected Cheryl Strayed’s Tiny Beautiful Things as the latest pick for her popular book club.
Strayed’s collection of advice columns, initially written anonymously under the name “Sugar” for the literary website The Rumpus, was reissued in a 10th-anniversary edition last week. A critic for Kirkus called the book “a realistic and poignant compilation of the intricacies of relationships.”
Witherspoon announced the book’s selection on Instagram, appearing in a video with her friend Strayed. “This is one of my favorite gifts to give to young people, older people, people going through divorce, grief, loss,” Witherspoon said. “There isn’t a human emotion that isn’t reflected … [It’s] one of the best books of all time.”
Witherspoon also wrote, “Sugar’s advice is no nonsense, poignant, soul-searching , grounded and fierce in so many loving ways.…No matter who I give this book to, the response is always a Big THANK YOU for sharing Sugar’s wisdom and humor.”
A television adaptation of Tiny Beautiful Things is in the works for Hulu, with Witherspoon and Strayed among the series’ executive producers. Kathryn Hahn (Mrs. Fletcher, WandaVision) is set to star in the show.
Strayed reacted to her book’s selection for the club on Instagram, writing, “How thrilled am I that Reese chose the new edition of Tiny Beautiful Things for @reesesbookclub this month? PRETTY DANG THRILLED! Thank you, Reese! I love you too.”
