Viewers looking for a small-screen adaptation of Waiting to Exhale may not have very long to wait.
A new series based on Terry McMillan’s bestselling 1992 novel is in development at 20th Television, according to Deadline, with Red Tails director Anthony Hemingway serving as executive producer.
According to a tweet by Terry McMillan on Thursday, Hemingway will also direct the series, and Lee Daniels will produce. Daniels was nominated for two Oscars for directing and co-producing the 2009 film Precious, based on the 1996 novel Push by Sapphire. McMillan also revealed that novelist Attica Locke—whose most recent book, 2019’s Heaven My Home, received a Kirkus Star—will co-write the show, along with actor Tembi Locke (Attica’s sister):
So, WAITING TO EXHALE is going to be a TV series. Produced by Lee Daniels. Attica Locke and Tembi Locke are writing. Anthony Hemingway will direct. I lucked out.

Waiting to Exhale tells the story of four 30-something Black friends in Phoenix, Arizona: Savannah, a recent transplant from Denver who’s looking for love; her best friend, Bernadine, whose husband’s infidelity has left her to raise two children by herself; Robin, a fan of astrology who chooses men who treat her badly; and single mother Gloria, who has a teenage son. In 1992, Kirkus said the novel had “heart and pizzazz and even, yes, the sweet smell of the breakthrough book.”
The novel was previously adapted as a popular 1995 feature film, directed by actor Forest Whitaker and starring Whitney Houston as Savannah, Angela Bassett as Bernadine, Lela Rochon as Robin, and Loretta Devine as Gloria. McMillan co-produced the movie and co-wrote its screenplay; she also wrote 2010’s Getting to Happy as a sequel to the original novel.
