A group of children’s authors is banding together to support Vice President Kamala Harris’ presidential campaign, Publishers Weekly reports.
Kidlit for Kamala, a new group endorsing the Democratic ticket, met virtually earlier this month to strategize in a session. The meeting was kicked off by writer Martha Brockenbrough (Unpresidented, Future Tense), who co-founded the group with author Carrie Firestone (Dress Coded), book coach Christy Yaros, and former political staffer Celeste Pewter.
Also taking place in the session were two authors who have written about Harris before: Nikki Grimes (Kamala Harris: Rooted in Justice) and Rajani LaRocca (My Little Golden Book About Kamala Harris).
A website for the group, which now features about 900 members, says that it is “a coalition of people who create, share, read, and value children's books. We oppose book banning and Project [2025’s] threats against artistic freedom and inclusive storytelling. We will use our skills as artists and storytellers to make the case for a Kamala Harris presidency.”
Brockenbrough told Publishers Weekly that the organization will focus on getting out the youth vote for Harris and her running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
“These are the voters who, if they show up, will ensure we have a Harris/Walz presidency,” she said. “They need to know how to register, and if they need an absentee ballot, they need a reminder to get that ballot in.”
